Hello everyone!
I am so excited to share Shattered Dreams with you all! This song is so close to my heart and has been with me for over a decade. It tells a visceral and heartbreaking story of the dangers of driving while under the influence of alcohol. To contrast the message, my producer Nicci Gomez and I decided to give this song a dance feel with electric and glitchy undertones while also staying true to the out-of-body point of view the lyrics purvey.
Unlike my some of my other works, Shattered Dreams wasn’t a result of “in the moment” inspiration. It was drawn out of me by my high school videography teacher, Mrs. Knight, who was deeply involved in the program Shattered Dreams. This program aimed to raise awareness about the perils of driving under the influence. She approached me, asking if I could compose a song for Shattered Dreams. Naturally, I accepted. Creating “Shattered Dreams” allowed me to put myself in someone else’s shoes and tell a story that was not my own, but is unfortunately the story of many.
This was written in the perspective of someone who is unaware of the events that are to happen. In the next moment, they are telling their story as a person who is witnessing their body and the wreckage as a ghost and in shock from what has taken place. Driving under the influence is currently the fourth largest preventable cause of death. I hope this message is clear and memorable to those of you reading this.
Here one moment and gone the next
You got a bottle in your right
And a life in your left
Lights keep passing faster and faster
With you unaware of the foreboding disaster
Your eyes glazed over And my hearts on fire
You never know when we can light it all up
Fleeting dissolving into the ashes
We’ll dissipate into these cosmic contractions
Before this night we all had dreams
Dreams of colleges and universities
Dreams of finding love and starting families
Yes these are
These are my shattered dreams
You will never comprehend
The sorrow my loved ones
will bare to withstand
Vacancies you have created
In satisfying your selfish deed
Before this night we all had dreams
Dreams of colleges and universities
Dreams of finding love and starting families
Yes these are
These are my shattered dreams
